On today's show we will call an amazing boy and his father. The boy claims to be a
mathematic savant. Here's the news story we saw:
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - In what is being billed, at least locally, as one of
the most extraordinary
cases of savantism ever seen, medical and psychological experts are
baffled to explain the mathematical capabilities of the 12 year-old Bobby
Windom, who is said to be able to manipulate 10-digit numbers in his
head with extreme ease. Numerous proffered tests have proven time and
again that his innate abilities are real and repeatable. Bobby was
seen strutting about defiantly after a recent competition in which he
embarrassed several other sixth graders.
Hello? Is this Bobby Windom?
MR. WINDOM
No, this is his father. Who is this?
SA
Well, Mr. Windom, may we talk to Bobby now? We are very interested in the
remarkable capabilities that your son has to do math
in his head. So, can we talk to him for a few minutes?
MR. WINDOM
SA
Mr. Windom, this is the Scripted Absurdity Show calling. We read a story about your
son, Bobby, and if we could, we'd like to talk to him a minute or so.
MR. WINDOM
Scripted Absurdity? That sounds odd.
SA
MR. WINDOM
Well, I guess so. But he can't talk long, he has homework. He may be good at arithmetic
but he stinks at English and science.
BOBBY
SA
Bobby? We'd like to talk to about your amazing ability to do math in your head.
BOBBY
We're not talking 23 + 45 either.
SA
So we've heard. Without taking a lot of your homework time, we were hoping
to be able to get a demonstration of your abilities.
BOBBY
SA
Now, what must we do, just make up some math problem for you and see that you
can figure out the answer in your head?
BOBBY
Well, what usually happens when I give a demo is that I define the
numbers to manipulate.
SA
OK. But they will be large numbers though, right?
BOBBY
SA
Let's go then. We're all ears.
BOBBY
OK, how about what is the sum of 34 trillion - that's 14 figures! - and
10 trillion - another 14-figure number - plus a minus 44 trillion? Before you
even reply, the answer is zero! Pretty good, huh?
SA
What? I could have done that math in my own head!
BOBBY
MR. WINDOM
Now, listen. We only agreed to talk to you if this type of harassment
was not going to occur.
SA
Very well, Mr. Windom. Can we talk to Bobby again?
BOBBY
SA
It's us, the Scripted Absurdity Show, Bobby. Remember?
BOBBY
SA
Bobby we're sorry. Can we do another example?
BOBBY
I don't know. Are you going to be mean again?
SA
We weren't mean. It's just that those numbers in your example were mostly
zeros and all of them were trillion type values. Can we do more of a mixture
of values?
BOBBY
SA
How about the product of -
BOBBY
My special capabilities only handle sums.
SA
BOBBY
Yeah, that's right. Only sums, but positive or negative sums!
MR. WINDOM
SA
Mr. Windom? Why are you on the phone?
MR. WINDOM
BOBBY
Only sums, but positive or negative sums!
SA
Those special capabilities of yours are kind of limited, aren't
they little Bobby?
BOBBY
Dad!? This man is annoying me!
SA
MR. WINDOM
Hey, nobody said you can annoy my boy! Quit it or so help me,
I'll hang up right now!
SA
Mr. Windom, we were only trying to give Bobby a case of some values other
than simple trillion values to manipulate.
MR. WINDOM
But, that's his forte. Trillions. Can't you make up some cases using very large
numbers, but very large trillion type numbers?
SA
Ok, we've got it.
Bobby. Ok. I think we have a better example of some trillion type
numbers for you to deal with.
BOBBY
Oh good. I do trillion numbers best.
SA
That's what your dad said. Now here are the numbers we'd like you to multiply,
six hun -
BOBBY
Multiply? Didn't I already say that my special capabilities only handle sums?
SA
I guess you did. But don't you think you could do one teensy, weensy little
product for us?
BOBBY
Patronization will get you nowhere, Mr. Goodbye!
SA
Now, be reasonable Bobby. Please.
BOBBY
Hey! Hang up. Get off my line, I've got to make another call!
