GILLIGAN
Cheer up, Ginger. We've only been on this island for 5 years. I'm sure you'll
be just as famous as you always were when you get back.
GINGER
Thanks Gilligan, but I think that everyone will probably have long
forgotten about Ginger Grant.
GILLIGAN
Yeah, you might be right.
GINGER SUDDENLY BEGINS TO CRY UNCONTROLLABLY.
THE SKIPPER WANDERS UP.
SKIPPER
What's the problem, Ginger?
GILLIGAN
She has this notion that her career is over. Even if we actually get back. Ever.
I mean, if we don't all die -
SKIPPER
That's enough Gilligan. Ginger, what in the world would make you think that you
won't still be famous when we get back?
GINGER
Gilligan said that I was right when I speculated that the public
wouldn't remember me.
THE SKIPPER GIVES GILLIGAN A DISGUSTED LOOK.
GILLIGAN
I just said that she may not be as famous when we return. I didn't say
that she wouldn't be famous at all.
SKIPPER
(right in front of Ginger)
Well, Gilligan, it doesn't matter. The important thing is for us to try to repair
Ginger's fragile ego. Right, Ginger? You do want us to repair your ego, right?
GINGER
Right, Skipper. But I don't know how you two can do it.
GILLIGAN
Maybe if we told you over and over again that we would come to see you
when you start to appear in public again, that would help!
GINGER
Ah, maybe. Do you have any novel ideas, Skipper?
SKIPPER
(beat)
(beat)
Oh yeah! What if we attended some
sort of one-person play - starring you, watched the whole thing, then
applauded wildly? How about that?
GILLIGAN
Who's going to star in the play, Skipper? We don't have any actors or actresses here.
GINGER SUDDENLY BEGINS TO CRY UNCONTROLLABLY - AGAIN.
SKIPPER
Gilligan! Ginger is the actress!
(beat)
Now Ginger, why don't you just go back to your
hut, practice your part for a month or so, then come back and perform it for
us? Now, go on. Go back and practice. Shoo!
GINGER STOPS SOBBING AND HEADS OFF TO HER HUT.
SKIPPER
See Gilligan? Now when you can be as diplomatic and cunning as I am, on a
consistent basis, you may, and I repeat, may, have a shot at being a real
skipper yourself one day.
GILLIGAN
You mean if we ever get off this god-forsaken island that your superior navigation
got us to, right?
SKIPPER
JUST THEN, A MAN BEARING A STRONG RESEMBLANCE TO WALLY COX ENTERS THE SCENE FROM THE LEFT.
SKIPPER
I'm sorry, who might you be?
