INT LONG BRANCH - NIGHT
MISS KITTY AND FESTUS ARE SITTING AT A TABLE DISCUSSING ASPECTS OF DOC ADAMS' CAPABILITIES AND HISTORY.
FESTUS
You know, Miss Kitty, I ain't never seen any kind of list of folks who have died
while old Doc has been taking care of them.
And, where is ole Doc, anyway?
KITTY
I don't know, but he suddenly left town yesterday after he got a telegram.
Festus, I don't think there is such a list! I mean,
who would have compiled it?!
FESTUS
Well, I guess Doc, himself!
KITTY
Why would Doc have kept a record of the people who have died while he was taking care of them?
I mean, what possible use would there be for such a list?
FESTUS
Well, I guess so's he could brag about his doctorin' to others. I mean if the
list is short.
KITTY
(getting bored with Festus)
Festus, I think I need to go start closing up. I'll see you tomorrow.
FESTUS
You know, Miss Kitty, without a list everyone is going to start assuming Doc is
not that good.
KITTY
Hey, he's the only Dr. we have, in case you hadn't noticed.
FESTUS
(after Miss Kitty is across the room)
I think I will just go and nose through ole Doc's garbage to see I can find something
resembling a list.
FESTUS GETS UP, GOES OUT OF THE LONG BRANCH AND HEADS OVER TO THE TRASH CAN BEHIND DOC'S OFFICE.
HE BEGINS TO GO THROUGH THE TOP LAYER OF TRASH.
FESTUS
(to himself)
(reading more)
"You may have won the American Publisher's Clearing House Sweepstakes Grand Prize.
If your last name starts with a letter before Z and ends with a letter at or after A
you may have won."
(to himself)
That scudder! He has won a lot of money and decided to leave all of us behind!
