LEAVE IT TO BEAVER

"Being Driven Crazy"

FADE IN: INT. DINING ROOM - EVE

WARD

Well, Wally. You have really stepped in it now!

JUNE

Wally, we are so ashamed!

BEAVER

Gee, Dad and Mom, what did Wally do?

WARD

Never mind, Beaver.

WARD

Well, Wally. What do you have to say for yourself?

WALLY

Well ... I didn't mean to wreck his car.

JUNE AND WARD LOOK AT EACH OTHER IN HORROR.

WARD

Wally, I don't understand why you would think you could drive the principal's car, anyway. You are only 13!

WALLY

Well, I thought that I could impress Mary Ellen Rogers.

BEAVER

Gee, Dad. I have driven a car also. What's the big deal?

JUNE AND WARD LOOK AT EACH OTHER IN HORROR. AGAIN.

JUNE

Whaaaaat? When did you drive a car, Beaver?

BEAVER

Well, the other day, when you went with the other lady to the store, I backed the car out to the street and then back to where it had been parked. I did that about 20 times, until I thought I saw the police coming around the corner.

WALLY

Gee, Dad. How come the Beaver isn't in trouble, too?

WARD

Well, Wally. We will deal with the Beaver later.

JUNE

Beaver, how did you even see over the dashboard in our car? It's a barge!

BEAVER

I couldn't! I just hoped I wouldn't hit anything.

(Beaver giggles nervously)

JUNE'S MOUTH DROPS OPEN,

WARD REACHES OVER AND GRABS BEAVER'S ARM AND JERKS THE BEAVER TOWARD HIM.

BEAVER

Ow, Dad!

WARD

Beaver, I want you to go upstairs until I get there. Now march!

BEAVER STARTS CRYING AND LEAVES TO GO TO HIS ROOM.

JUNE

Oh Ward, did you have to hurt the Beaver?!

WARD

June, if I had wanted to hurt him, I would have. That little ... -

JUNE

- Ward! That's enough!

WALLY

Dad, can I be excused now?

WARD

Whaaaaat?! You certainly can't! We need to talk about your issue.

What in the world made you think you could drive the principal's car?

WALLY

Like I said, I knew Mary Ellen Rogers would go ape if she saw me driving a car.

WARD

But, the principal's car?!

WALLY

It was the only one I saw that had keys in it. Can you believe that?

WARD

Wally, you have crossed a line I had hoped would never be crossed.

JUNE

Ward! That's enough!

WARD

What? Again with the "that's enough"? I thought you were mad also, dear.

JUNE

I was, but now I'm not.

WARD

Why? Why not? Don't you think we have a problem that needs to be rectified?

WALLY
(fearful of the meaning/implication)

Rectified?

WARD

June?

JUNE

I saw how you hurt the Beaver and my mad sort of ... disappeared!

WARD

How about I make your generous allowance disappear?

JUNE

Well, Ward Cleaver, don't make me play the trump card, because we both know I have it! And I'm not talking about Kings and Queens!

WALLY
(confused)

Cards?

WARD
(to June)

Well, can we all just keep eating?

(to Wally)

And, Wally, go call that cute little brother of yours back down so we can continue our family meal.

WALLY

So Dad, does this mean I am absolved?

WARD
(cutting Wally a cold stare)

Ah ... You? ... The Beaver?
